At Tallah we are committed to ensuring the health, safety and of all our students, staff, visitors and contractors. We aim to provide a safe environment where everyone can participate in dance and related activities without risk of injury or harm. We recognise our responsibility to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and to promote a culture of safety awareness throughout the school.

Objectives

  • To prevent accidents and work-related ill health
  • To provide a safe and healthy environment for dance instruction and practice
  • To identify, assess, and control potential risks associated with dance activities
  • To ensure all staff are competent and trained in health and safety matters
  • To review and continuously improve our health and safety procedures

Responsibilities

Directors

  • Ensure that this policy is implemented, communicated, and reviewed regularly
  • Provide adequate resources for maintaining health and safety
  • Ensure all staff receive appropriate training and supervision
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and inspections of facilities and equipment

Staff

  • Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others
  • Report any hazards, defects or incidents to principals immediately
  • Enforce safety rules during all classes, rehearsals and performances
  • Ensure students warm up and cool down properly to prevent injury

Students and visitors

  • Follow all health and safety instructions from staff
  • Wear appropriate uniform and footwear for dance activities
  • Report any injuries or unsafe conditions to an instructor promptly

We will carry out regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards related to:

  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Physical strain, overuse or impact injuries
  • Electrical equipment, sound systems and lighting
  • Fire safety and emergency evacuation
  • Hygiene and infection control

And findings will be documented, and necessary control measures will be implemented.

Accident and incident reporting

All accidents, near misses and injuries must be recorded in the accident report book. More serious incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities as required. Our first aid supplies will be kept maintained and we will have a member of first aid trained staff available during all operating hours.

Fire safety and emergency procedures

  • Fire exits must be clearly marked, unobstructed and known to all occupants
  • Fire drills will be carried out at least once a year
  • Staff are responsible for ensuring all students safely evacuate during emergencies

First Aid

  • A first aid kit is available and fully equipped within the premises
  • Designated staff members are first aid trained
  • Parents/ Guardians will be contacted immediately in case of an injury to a minor

Hygiene and Infection Control

  • Floors will be cleaned weekly and equipment sanitized regularly
  • Students and staff should not attend classes if unwell or contagious

Safeguarding and wellbeing

  • The emotional and physical wellbeing of all students is top priority
  • Staff must maintain professional boundaries and follow the school’s safeguarding policy
  • Any concerns regarding abuse or misconduct must be reported immediately to the DSL

This policy will be reviewed annually or following any significant incident or legislative change. Staff and students will be consulted on any major changes.
